Monitor biodiversity for action
Highlights
The 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) attracted thousands worldwide to witness the crafting of a new Global Biodiversity Framework, supplanting the ineffective Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
The framework aimed to spur immediate action across societies, with four goals and 22 targets addressing biodiversity protection, equitable benefit sharing, and resource mobilization.
Central to the framework was a monitoring system proposing indicators for tracking progress, though disagreements arose over indicator selection, data sovereignty, and flexibility.
Despite challenges, achieving consensus on a comprehensive monitoring system was deemed crucial for global biodiversity preservation.
