Minister Dufour visited McGill to talk about biodiversity

 

Andy met with the Minister of Forests, Wildlife and Parks on the Quebec government. In a forthright and wide-ranging conversation about the state of Quebec’s biodiversity. Andy said: “the goal is to transform the way society values, uses, and protects biodiversity so that we can ‘bend the biodiversity curve’ and restore what we are losing”. Andy presented the key recommendations of the “Plan Sud pour le Québec,” a white paper released by the QCBS and partners in 2021 that proposes a strategic plan for Quebec’s biodiversity in the south of the province, including several recommendations to accelerate biodiversity protection south of the 49th parallel - “We need a radical transformation of how society values nature if we are to abate the high rates of biodiversity change and climate change.” Andy was joined by Katrine Turgeon professor at UQO, and QCBS member, presented the work of the CESCO chair. She stressed the importance of providing a coherent legislative framework to protect wildlife habitats for endangered species that considers the constraints of land use planning and the apprehensions of private owners.
